Nodular graphite cast iron

Chemical composition of nodular graphite cast iron is different from grey cast iron because it contains higher percentage of carbon, silicon and magnesium (or cerium) so graphite is extracted in a form of spheroids. Besides, it contains significantly less sulphur than grey cast iron.
Metal basis structure of nodular graphite cast iron can be pearlitic, pearlitic-ferritic or ferritic. By alloying or heat-treating also other structures can be achieved.
Nodular graphite cast iron is material which conquers the market and replaces other ferro-castings.
Nodular graphite cast iron has much higher strenght than grey cast iron, but it lacks capability of absorbing vibrations and machinability of grey cast iron. Mechanical characteristics are between cast steel and grey cast iron: it is machined easier than steel and has better capability of absorbing vibrations and better casting characteristics than cast steel. Special advantage of nodular graphite cast iron in comparison with grey cast iron and plain carbon steel, is it's yield point.
Pearlitic nodular graphite cast iron is best choice for many uses. If castings are exposed to deformations and strike loads, it is recommended to use ferritic nodular graphite cast iron. The most economical and most competitive quality is ferritic-pearlitic quality of nodular graphite cast iron because it has high strenght and good wear resistance.
By alloying and heat-treatment, all kinds of nodular graphite cast iron of high strenght can be produced.
