Vermicular cast iron

MARK: CGI (Compacted Graphite Iron) - USA
  GGV Germany (DIN)
  GJV Europe (EN)

In production process, iron basic melt is being alloyed with magnesium, along with measuring activity of oxygen in the melt. By adding the titanium, the range of vermicular cast iron is increasing. The inoculation is done in stream. Carbon is extracted in the form of graphite worms and nodule.
Vermicular cast iron is behaving like grey cast iron during the casting , but it has characteristics more like nodular graphite cast iron. Besides casting-technical advantages, cast iron with vermicular graphite is useful for casting of those castings which are liable to temperature changes. It absorbes vibrations like grey cast iron.
It is very good replacement for parts which used to be made from whiteheart malleable cast iron.
It has wide range of use in production of cylinder heads for diesel motors for ships. Complicated castings have lower risk of cracking. It is high wear resistance. Tensile strenght is between values of grey cast iron and nodular graphite cast iron. It has high elastic modulus.
Structure is very similar to nodular graphite cast iron. Metal basis in cast condition is mostly ferritic or ferritic-pearlitic structure which we achieve without additional heat-treatment.
Main characteristic of vermicular cast iron is combination of convenient characteristics of grey cast and nodular graphite cast iron.
